Why Passwords Aren’t Enough and How 2FA Strengthens Your Cyber Defences

For years, passwords have been the primary way we protect our online accounts. But with cyber threats growing in sophistication, relying on passwords alone is no longer enough to keep your firm and client data safe.

The problem with passwords

Even strong, unique passwords can be compromised. Phishing attacks, password leaks, and credential stuffing are now common tactics used by cyber criminals. In fact, the 2023 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report found that over 80% of hacking-related breaches involved stolen or weak passwords.

Once a password is exposed, your account is at risk – and so is your business.

How Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) helps

Two-Factor Authentication adds an extra layer of security to your accounts by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone or an authentication app, in addition to your password.

This simple step makes it significantly harder for unauthorised users to gain access. According to Microsoft, enabling 2FA blocks 99.9% of automated attacks on accounts – making it one of the most effective ways to protect your data.

Why it matters for conveyancing firms

As a conveyancer, you hold sensitive client information, financial data, and documents that are valuable targets for cyber criminals. A single compromised account can have serious consequences for your firm’s operations, reputation, and compliance obligations.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre estimates that the average cost of a cyber-attack for small to medium businesses in Australia is around $46,000. This is a significant risk that can be mitigated with simple, effective security measures like 2FA.

2FA helps protect:

  • Client data and trust
  • Your firm’s reputation
  • Your compliance with cybersecurity best practices

Getting ready for mandatory 2FA

From 31 October 2025, 2FA will be mandatory for triConvey users. Enabling it now ensures your firm remains protected and compliant ahead of the deadline. Here’s how you can set up your 2FA.

Don’t leave your defences down. Strengthen them with 2FA today.
